The “dual zipper gripper” is a very nice touch.
Sized for carry-on compliance, but lockable for checking carry-firearms, the Pelican 1510LOC proved up to the task.
A bit smaller than my TravelPro, the Pelican Case was loaded with pants, five sets of shirts, socks, underwear and a belt plus toiletries, hairbrush, hard hat and a Kimber .45 with three mags. My normal 5-day load out kit. I also managed to jam in a fifth of Jack Daniels for medicinal purposes.
The TSA check in process went smoothly at both DFW and STL for my return. The gate agent at STL told me she knew nothing about firearms and would not know how to tell if one was loaded or not.
I showed her what to look for – where the chamber was located and how to demonstrate that it was empty, locking the slide back in the process. She just muttered, “Boys and their toys” and passed me though to the TSA checkpoint who didn’t even open the case.
When the case came off the baggage carousel (3rd in St. Louis, 1st back in Dallas) I was on my way.
I reloaded the Kimber on the Hertz bus from the terminal and I was lawfully armed for the long walk through the dark airport parking facility to retrieve my car.
The only thing to add to this baggage setup will be two common-keyed MasterLock padlocks to replace the single Ruger lock I used today.
The Pelican 1510LOC will be my check-in and carry-on choice from here on. Highly recommended – and much less expensive than my ‘top of the line’ $600+ TravelPro bag.
