Maid Service / housekeeping was running very late at my 2-star (I am being generous with the rating) hotel today.
By 2:00 PM they had managed to remove the used towels, but the beds were unmade and my essential coffee ration had not been replenished.
At about 5:00 PM I retrieved some coffee packages from the Front Desk and straightened up the bedding myself.
At about 5:30 PM I heard a tap-tap-tap and a “housekeeping” call at the door to tend to the room. I opened the door to find a person who had obviously had a long and hectic day.
Perhaps the laundry systems were not working?
Maybe they were short handed?
I don’t know the cause, but instead of complaining about the lateness of the service, I handed the housekeeping person $10.00 and said, “No thanks to the clean-up. Take the rest of the day off.”
Over the sound of the vacuum moving down the hall, I could hear excited talk go on for a good 10 minutes after that.
Any seasoned traveler who wanted to act like an asshole would have surely relished this opportunity to complain about the late service.
Me? I was able to cover the essentials myself and give the housekeepers a bit of a break, a $10 tip and possibly a chance to make a long day a little shorter.
If you have to travel, try to travel well.
