I bought a pair of Nike’s at the local Academy, and the checkout person asked:
“Are the shoes both size 13?”
Me: “Wha? … err, Yes.”
Hmm.
I told the wife about that and she informed me that was not strange at all.
Checkout persons routinely check for size matches because customers often put items in the wrong boxes on display; or intentionally buy different sizes for left and right feet; or put one style of shoes into a (less expensive style box) for checkout; or a myriad of other reasons that never occurred to me.
It wasn’t a Very Strange Question after all.
