GoDaddy’s Hosting Extortion Malware Racket

It seems to me that GoDaddy inserts malware into its hosted websites in order to sell website clean-up and monitoring.

Additional charges so far are $200+ for my domain, another $200+ for this sub-domain.

Very disreputable. Unquestionably unethical.

When asked to respond the the statement above, my GoDaddy technical representative said that, “I’ve heard that before, but if true, it would be unethical. But as such a large company, subject to monitoring it would be unlikely.

I reminded my “technical representative” that he was talking to a Blogger who may post details of this discussion.

He said: “I’ve heard that before …

GoDaddy has extorted several hundreds of dollars from my hosting account due to malware issues that GoDaddy has been paid to monitor and resolve.

The first payment I made was for my primary domain. The second payment I was forced to make today was for a sub-domain – redirected from the primary domain address. Why this “protection money” was not applicable to the entire domain is unclear.

If GoDaddy’s business practices would become a topic for Congressional Hearings, I would testify with details from my own personal experience.

Update: The malware pop-up is gone within 10 minutes of my call to GoDaddy to report the incident (and pay them $204).
