John E. Rosenthal is a lying liar who lies.
Had enough gun violence? We can’t let the NRA block sensible gun-control laws.
By John E. Rosenthal from the February 20, 2008 edition
Boston – Let’s get this out of the way. I am a gun owner and a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment.
Lie#1: You sir, are no supporter of the 2nd Amendment. To say so is a lie.
What I do not support is extending the rights embedded in the Second Amendment to terrorists, criminals, and children.
Lie#2, #3, #4: Terrorists, criminals and children are not legal gun owners. To say so are lies.
In the wake of a horrific campus shooting at Northern Illinois University, where 21 students were shot, we’re reminded again that national gun laws must be strengthened.
Lie#5: Strengthening gun laws has made the shooting possible by disarming the victims. To say otherwise is a lie.
Sadly, gun laws have only been weakened since the massacres at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech.
Lie#6: Laws have not been weakened. To say otherwise is a lie.
To be sure, these headline-grabbing mass shootings may not have been preventable.
Lie#7: A woman with a gun prevented just such a mass shooting in a church earlier this year. Your statement is a lie.
But beyond the headlines, consider this news: 83 Americans die each and every day from gun violence. And much of that violence is very preventable.
This is perhaps the only true statement, although not for the reason you imply – defensive use guns makes violence preventable. I cannot vouch for the number 83, however, so I will assume it is a lie, because you lie. (Lie #8).
Current federal law allows an unlimited number of easily concealable handguns and military-style weapons to be sold privately in 32 states without a criminal background check or an ID.
Lie #9: No initial purchases of firearms can be made without Identification and a Federal Background check.
Why do we take such a hands-off approach to these dangerous weapons?
Lie #10: We don’t, therefore you must lie to imply we do.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) and the gun industry lobby are a big part of the answer.
You have to show ID to purchase alcohol or cigarettes.
Lie #11: No you don’t. Your statement is a lie.
But if you want a Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifle (capable of penetrating steel and taking out an armored vehicle from more than a mile) you need only to show up at one of 5,000 legal gun shows and fork over the cash – no ID or background check required!
Lie #12: ID and Background checks are performed at Gun Shows. Have you ever been to one? If your answer is “yes” You are probably lying.
It is well documented that Al Qaeda, Hizbullah, and IRA terrorists have exploited this loophole in US gun laws to purchase military-style weapons from “private sellers” at gun shows.
Lie #13: ORLY? Why do I suspect you may be lyin about that?
In a recent radio debate with me, an NRA official confirmed that the organization is opposed to uniform criminal background checks for fear they will “shut down gun shows.” The NRA says that not even people on the suspected terrorist watch list should be barred from purchasing guns because – are you ready for this? – “we do not know how people are put on the list” and “many times people are victims of mistaken identity.”
Eighty-nine percent of Americans said they wanted mandatory background checks for anyone buying a gun, according to a 2007 Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and The Tarrance Group survey. But the NRA has continually blocked such common-sense legislation as mandatory background checks and five-day waiting periods to buy a handgun. NRA policies handcuff national law enforcement’s ability to effectively regulate private gun sales, gun shows, and even the sharing of crime-gun trace data within the law enforcement community.
Lie #14, #15: Your survey source. Like your sham organizations have no credibility. Therefore their surveys are probably based on lies. It is the law, not “NRA policies” that allow commerce in arms protected under the 2nd amendment.
By putting guns into the hands of terrorists, criminals, and the mentally ill,
Lie #16, #17, #18: Really just repeating lie #2, #3, #4 and adding mentally ill – another prohibited group of firearm owners.
the policies the NRA helped create a society where defense by guns becomes mandatory.
Lie #19: The NRA created society? A lie.
Meanwhile, the bank accounts of the NRA leaders and lobbyists are enriched and congressional coffers are replenished. Gun manufacturers reinforce this cycle by investing in the NRA.
According to Federal Elections Commission Reports the NRA has spent more than $22 million on congressional candidates in order to support its agenda during the past four election cycles. In 2004, the NRA spent nearly $4 million to reelect George W. Bush.
Immunity from lawsuits and freedom from consumer protection regulations and manufacturing standards are just a few of the benefits delivered by the NRA and provided by a complicit president and Congress.
Massachusetts stands out as an example of a state that has successful gun violence prevention legislation. Along with 17 other states, it has enacted background checks for all gun sales. Only Hawaii has a firearms fatality rate lower than that of Massachusetts. Hawaii is fortunate; bordered by water, it is less accessible to gun traffickers than Massachusetts, where more than 60 percent of guns traced to crime come from out of state. Bay State neighbors New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine are three of the top four crime-gun source states for Massachusetts, where guns are easily purchased by prohibited buyers without a background check or an ID.
Most law-abiding citizens like me buy guns from federally licensed dealers required to perform background checks. Incredibly, federal law allows criminals and terrorists who can’t pass background checks to easily buy guns from private individuals in 32 states without detection.
Lie #20: See lie #9. A lie.
The bloodshed in our communities and schools (there were multiple campus shootings last week!) is largely preventable. Of course, not every law is going to stop violence completely, but shouldn’t we help prevent the tragedies we can by weeding out the criminals?
Lie #21: We do. You question by implying otherwise is a lie.
It is time for reasonable people – the majority of Americans who agree with me
Lie #22: The Majority of Americans do not agree with you, and you lie to say otherwise.
– to insist that Congress enact sensible and consistent federal laws that require criminal background checks for all gun sales in the US.

[...] One of the biggest lies often told. [...]
While the author of the article which you so ably fisk did tell some incredible whoppers, and imply a whopper where writing about private sales, actually he is at least technically correct in one sense.
Just a quibble, really: private sale of a firearm, either handgun or long gun, from one non-FFL holder to another non-FFL holder when both parties are residents of the same state is certainly legal in at least two states where I have lived, MD & TX. Likely others as well. As long as the firearm is not a NFA weapon or AOW firearm, private purchases are generally legal (omitting for example sale of a handgun to a prohibited person such as a felon or a minor, which are indeed illegal already).
This seems to be where the anti-gunners get their lie about the gun show loophole. Private party sales at gun shows, (while conducted under the same laws as private party sales anywhere else), do not require a NICS check.
Years ago, just before the Assault Weapon Ban (spit) was to start, I myself purchased a nice Ruger 357 from an individual just after he refused a lowball offer from a licensed dealer with a table set up at the gun show. The previous owner wanted to stock up on hi-cap mags, and I wanted a rugged as hell 4″ 357. Happiness ensued on both our parts.
Otherwise, yes, the entire article is one bald-faced outright lie after another.
He has been to a Gunshow.

And he attempted to make a Strawman buy to prove a point. He didn’t actully do it, and the BATFE investigated him and confiscated the S&W revolver that was bought.
Well done!!
Well, I’m not about to call you a liar, but on at least one of these points your wrong.
Children can, and do, own legal firearms.
As they should. And the 2nd Amendment should protect children as well as adults from lying liars like John Rosenthal
It is true that many states allow children to own firearms (16 years to own a long gun and 18 to own a handgun in Virginia). However, they can’t legally buy one from an FFL.
Also, most of the misleading information about gun shows is not actually related to private sales of firearms. Private sales of firearms typically make up a miniscule percentage of transactions at those shows. They get their percentages by including all of those tables that don’t actually sell firearms. All those people selling books, knives, and gun bags are lumped into the category of “vendors that are not licensed gun dealers”.

“But beyond the headlines, consider this news: 83 Americans die each and every day from gun violence. And much of that violence is very preventable”
It’s NOT a true statement. Less than 10,000 people are victims of gun armed criminals anually.
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_04/offenses_reported/violent_crime/murder.html
Also, it’s not GUN violence it’s CRIMINAL violence. Guns no more commit crimes than cars do.
The only thing he was right about in the statement is that violent crime IS preventable; By armed citizens, not by ineffective gun laws.
I just wrote a “nice” letter to the Christian Science Moniter about Rosenthal’s rant. Don’t know if they will print it, but I had my say. Guys like him are friends of criminals. Disarm law abiding citizens and the entire country ends up like Washington DC. Do the math on his stats of 83 people dying a day from gun violence..that amounts to 30,295 a year. WOW! We did not loose that many in Vietnam in a year…or in Iraq and Afghanistan. Stats do not jive with FBI stats either.
You are correct..just like Sarah Brady and her bunch..he is a liar!
