BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) – A high school is reassessing its security procedures after a gunman chased a victim through the halls.
About noon Friday, two men who were not students at Central Medical Magnet High School got into a dispute at a nearby apartment complex. The gunman shot the victim in the stomach, but the victim crossed the street and entered the school as the gunman chased him.
A school staff member and Principal Patricia Lambert, who were in the front office, heard the victim’s cries. They immediately got on the intercom and gave the code for staff members to lock all doors and keep the students from leaving classrooms, said Clydell Duncan, Beaumont Independent School District police chief.
The school purchased 73 video cameras in May 2006. Seconds after the gunman entered the school, he can be seen on video rounding a corner as a teacher closed a classroom door under the lockdown order.
No students were injured.
What system is that?
The video camera system? Seems to me that if the gunman was intent of doing harm to students, the “system” would have “worked well” too – by recording the mayhem.
Filming a gunman entering a school and proclaiming the system works? Seems to me that the system recorded a failure.
By the way, the news story claimed the cameras filmed the gunman “rounding a corner after door were locked”. Not so, watch the raw video here. The door is OPEN as the gunman passes by.
All the other doors the gunman opened during the chase were unlocked, too. Some lock-down procedure ya got there. bub.

It’s important for liberals to declare victory without actually having one. It’s like those kid’s soccer games where “everyone wins!”
Any system that a) creates victim disarmament zones and b) causes those victims to lock themselves in as sitting ducks for cowardly murderers is totally stupid.
Amen to that! If it had worked nay better it could have been a massacre. One can only imagine the self-congratulations that would have followed.
If a massacre resulted, the unfortunate fact is that the very same people who said that the “system works” would have used the event as a way to support more gun control laws.
