Bush Vows to Get Immigration Bill Passed
On immigration, Mr. Bush is facing a backlash in his party’s conservative wing, whose members decry the bill as amnesty. On Tuesday, he plans to attend the Senate Republican policy luncheon on Capitol Hill — a rare step for a president who typically has lawmakers come to him at the White House — in an effort to revive the measure.
“I’m under no illusions about how hard this is,” he said, adding that he was disappointed that the measure had been “temporarily derailed.”

This whole mess is still such a shock to me. I grew up respecting our laws, respecting those in authority and that I suppose makes it why I have a hard time understanding why a person does not obey our laws. I don’t get it, how does a person hold a position of power at any level and not see that blatantly ignoring existing laws and pushing for something that favors those that break our laws weakens our country. An d that is just for starters how bad this is for Ameirca and it’s future.

We just passed a potentially useful piece of immigration that mandates the construction of a 700 mile fence along parts of our border with Mexico. Admitted, this fence is not perfect – there is too much allowance for “vapor” of all sorts, including “vitrual fencing,” but it is a start. Building it will demonstrate what sort of fencing is most effective in shutting off the flood of illegal aliens crossing into this country, currently at 750,000 per year, and growing.
Second, we already have a comprehensive immigration reform plan in place. It was passed as a large amnesty package back in 1986, and further modified in later years. Only one problem with it: It was never enforced. (And why anybody trusts that this new “comprehensive” plan will be enforced any better than the last one is beyond me…) So in answer to Mel Martinez’s knowing dishonesty, I reply: What is my solution? What is my answer? It is this, Senator: Build the 700 miles of fencing immediately, and staff the Border Patrol to properly man it. Immediately begin to enforce the immigration laws already on the books. Do so strictly and rigorously, especially those sections dealing with employer penalties for violation. Immediately prosecute local and state administrations that violate federal law by establishing “sanctuary” policies, and mandate that local and state police should check status whenever there is any suspicion whatsoever that persons they apprehend may not be legally present in this country.
Do all that, Senator – which is possible without passing a single new law – and then let Americans see that you are serious about stopping illegal immigration. If you do that for a few years, I, at least, would be willing to put reform back on the table. But not one minute before, sir. Not one minute before.

Now the Amnesty Bill is in a coma, it’s time to start organizing the punishment of those who decided to sell out this nation and stomp on the Rule of Law to get a few votes. You peeps in Arizona have your work cut out for you as well. Isn;t it time to have senators who truly repreent your views? I understand Kyl was just reelected and sees anopther 6 years in front of him, but we in California enjoyed a thing called a “recall” when one of our politicians lost sight of what mattered. Yes, it’s hard work, but exciting, and when it works, it’s beautiful.
In the meantime, every time is a good time to chime in with these Amnesty Republicans, reminding them you’re watching and waiting. The president is scheduled to go to the Hill on Tuesday in an effort to use his 29% approval rating to resurrect this monster, so maintaining communication with these freaks can’t hurt.

The hack leftwing propagandists at the NYT bray full force the latest talking points from the DNC and those even further left, and blame the collapse of theamnesty/open borders for illegal aliens on conservatives and the GOP.
That is perfectly fine with me. Not only am I willing, on behalf of all conservatives, libertarians, and members of the Republican base who labored at heroic length to defeat this travesty to accept all the “blame” for it, I (and I suspect all the rest of us) glory in it.
Of course, the NYT hack can’t resist printing lies of both omission and comission as if they were truth:
Public opinion polls, including a New York Times/CBS News Poll conducted last month, showed broad support among Americans for the bill’s major provisions.
No mention of polls like the Rasmussen effort – with unbiased questions – that showed exactly the opposite.
“It’s a lot easier to yell one word, ‘amnesty,’ and it takes a little more to explain, ‘No, it’s not, and if you don’t do anything you have a silent amnesty,’ ” said Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona, a Democrat who backed the measure.
Of course, omitted is that we could do something. We could enforce the laws already on the books. But political hacks like Napolitano and Bush have already shown they have no intention of doing something as simple and effective as that.
Christopher Sabatini, senior director of policy at the Americas Society/Council of the Americas, which follows Hispanic immigration, described the bill as “born an orphan in terms of popular support.”
“You got the sense of a deafening silence from the supporters, and the roar of the opposition,” Mr. Sabatini said.
Left unsaid is that, as the unbiased Rasmussen poll revealed, the silence came from the fact that the supporters simply did not exist, except in corporate board rooms and DNC political councils, and their paid proxies inside the D.C. Beltway.

From today’s WSJ: Chief among the complaints has been the charge that the immigration compromise would offer “amnesty” to 12 million illegal immigrants. Law-and-order conservatives say these people are lawbreakers and shouldn’t be rewarded for cheating. That’s a position Mr. Kyl himself took in his last election. What does he say …

I’d say (and have said) the characterization should be “rather stupidly” set up the GOP. Only in NYT-land and inside the Beltway do people think actual voters will punish candidates for failing to vote for or support amnesty and open borders for 12-20 million illegal aliens.
The GOP has been incredibly lucky in being faced with the only conceivable opposition even stupider than it is: The Democratic Party.

“Voters wanted an immigration deal”: A quick word on those polls MSM writers–e.g. Dan Balz–are using to suggest that the Senate thwarted the popular will in blocking “comprehensive immigration reform.” I’d been puzzled myself by the consistent polls showing that a) the comprehensive bill itself was wildly unpopular, yet b) –and these are the polls emphasized by the MSM–the controversial “earned legalization” planks, when they are described to voters, win majority approval.
But Mystery Pollster cleared it up for me. The key is the Gallup finding that only half of the public is paying much attention to the immigration debate. Those who are paying attention oppose the bill 30% to 11%, but 58 % “don’t know enough to say.” On this basis, Gallup editor-in-chief Frank Newport calls those who oppose the bill a “vociferous minority”–apparently believing that if only more voters paid attention they’d endorse the bill, because when they’re given the questions describing various paths to citizenship for illegals who “have a job” and “pay back taxes,” they mostly say yes.
The flaw in this “scientific research,” MP points out, is that by Newport’s own admission these are mainly voters who aren’t paying attention and are hearing these terms for the first time, so “their reactions may vary greatly along with the text of the descriptions provided.” If they react positively to loaded words like “job” and “pay taxes” when they first hear them, that’s no guarantee that they’d endorse the Senate bill’s provisions if they starting following them closely (and began to hear other terms, like “immediate legalization” and “sanctuary”).
We simply don’t know how the 58% would react if for some reason they started paying attention–though Gallup’s own finding that those who are paying the most attention are the most lopsidedly (61% to 17%) opposed to the bill is hardly evidence that they’d support it. Indeed, when Gallup described to voters various alternatives, the most popular, at 42%, was “to require illegal immigrants to leave, to but allow them to return if they meet certain requirements over a period of time.” That sounds a lot like–yikes–deportation, no? Another 14% wanted flat deportation with no possibility of eventual return. 42+14=56.
Mickey has done yeoman’s work throughout this entire debacle, and continues to do so. We owe him a deep vote of gratitude, and most likely will continue to do so, because, well, it ain’t over till it’s over:
Don’t calm down: The White House says Bush is going to keep pushing the “grand bargain” in a Capitol Hill meeting next week. This could mean he’s planning a surge-like effort, or it could just be part of the gradual let-down-easy process in which he learns that it’s not really about the amendments–the Senate is just not that into him. …
P.S.: Sen. Salazar says the bill “may return in July,” according to the Denver Post. Why? Because “‘Failure on immigration reform is not an option.’” …
Permitting the pro-amnesty forces to remain in office is not an option either.

Bush Hopes To Revive Immigration Bill
President Bush, trying to recover from a stinging setback on immigration, will personally try in a visit to the Capitol next week to revive the embattled plan for legalizing millions of unlawful immigrants.
Bush’s scheduled lunch on Tuesday with GOP senators is part of a campaign by the White House and allies in both parties to placate or outmaneuver conservative Republicans who blocked the broad immigration measure this week. They said Friday they would try again to reach accord on the number of amendments the dissidents could offer.
Opponents of the bill promised to continue fighting all such efforts.
Several Senate conservatives continue to say they have not been allowed to offer enough changes to the bill. Some of their proposals would make it easier to detect and deport immigrants who have overstayed their visas or committed other violations.
Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., a key opponent, said the bill as written “still unfairly burdens taxpayers, doesn’t ensure secure borders and guarantees amnesty” for illegal immigrants.
The bill’s supporters say DeMint and other critics will oppose the measure no matter how many amendments are accepted. Nonetheless, they agreed Friday that some type of peace accord with the conservatives is essential if the measure is to return to life.
“If we’re able to come up with a list of amendments that could take two or even three days to complete, 10 years from now or 100 years from now who will care that it was an extra three days if we can achieve the result that we’re talking about?” said Sen. Jon Kyl , R-Ariz.
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., told reporters he was hopeful because the Senate “is a chemical place. There’s a flow to activity here. The tide comes in and goes out. And once in a while, the stars get lined up correctly, and we move ahead.”
Sen. Dianne Feinstein , D-Calif., complained that critics continue to use the word “amnesty” to refer to proposals to legalize immigrants who agreed to pay fines, learn English and, at some point, briefly return to their home countries before obtaining lawful status in the U.S.
“I’ve listened to talk show hosts drumming up the opposition by using this word ‘amnesty’ over and over and over again,” she said. In her 15 years in the Senate, Feinstein said, “I’ve never received more hate or more racist phone calls and threats.”

I appreciate the fact that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has joined us, as well as House Majority Leader John Boehner. I appreciate them coming in from their respective states as I sign this piece of legislation. I want to thank Congressman Peter King, who’s the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in the House of Representatives. I appreciate you being here, Peter.
Ours is a nation of immigrants. We’re also a nation of law. Unfortunately, the United States has not been in complete control of its borders for decades and, therefore, illegal immigration has been on the rise. We have a responsibility to address these challenges. We have a responsibility to enforce our laws. We have a responsibility to secure our borders. We take this responsibility seriously.”

The other sign Reid is ready to throw in the towel is his distancing the Dems from that trash with, “This is the president’s bill. The only reason this bill is in such trouble is because of your passion and hard work. I watched “Saving Private Ryan” last night (again). I want to remind you what the Tom Hanks character says to Private Ryan at the end when Hanks is dying on the bridge. Almost everyone has been killed at that point, including most of Hanks’ men who were there to save Ryan. And they did. Those who remain are saved by allied planes nailing the German tanks. Hanks calls Ryan over and says into his ear, “Earn this.” That’s something we should all do every day–we need to earn what every American has done in the past to preserve and save our nation.

A 58 percent majority says the United States needs to enforce the current laws, while 34 percent think the country’s immigration laws need to be completely overhauled.
What’s interesting about this is that polls like these are starting to pop up and get traction. I don’t think the opinions of Americans about amnesty have changed, but I do think pollsters are starting to construct more or less unbiased questions that permit the anti-amnesty sentiment to be gauged.

Let me ask you a hypothetical question. What do you think America would do if Canadian soldiers were firing dozens of missiles every day into Buffalo, N.Y.? What do you think our response would be if Mexican troops for two years had launched daily rocket attacks on San Diego — and bragged about it?
I can tell you, our response would look nothing like Israel’s restrained and pinpoint reactions to daily missile attacks from Gaza. We would use whatever means necessary to win the war. There would likely be numerous casualties on our enemy’s side, but we would rightfully hold those who attacked us responsible.
More than 1,300 rockets have been fired into Israel from Gaza since Palestinians were given control two years ago. Israelis, however, have gone to incredible lengths to stop the war against them without harming Palestinian non-combatants. But make no mistake, Israel is at war. The elected Hamas government regularly repeats its official promise to destroy Israel entirely and replace it with an Islamic state. Hamas openly took Credit for killing one woman and wounding dozens more last week alone.
The Palestinian strategy is to purposely target and kill Israeli civilians. Then, when Israel goes after those launching the attacks, Palestinians claim to be the victims. If Palestinian civilians aren’t hurt in the Israeli attacks, they stage injuries and deaths. Too often, they garner sympathy and support from a gullible or anti-Semitic media in the international community.
Israelis, themselves, are often incapable of facing the damage they inflict in self-defense. Knowing this, Islamic extremists are using their own populations as human shields.
I’m beginning to wonder how much longer this vicious plot will work though. International sympathy for Palestinians has diminished as the same Islamofascist extremists have brought havoc to Madrid, Bali, Somalia, London and elsewhere. More importantly, Israelis themselves are suffering so badly, they may be on the verge of losing their sympathy for the people who have sworn to kill them.
Imagine what it would be like to live, knowing that a rocket could fall on you or your children at any minute. Half of those who live nearest to Gaza have fled their homes. Those remaining are traumatized by daily warning sirens and explosions.
The irony is that Israel has the military might to easily win the war that is being waged against them today. They haven’t used that might, in the past, out of compassion for Palestinian civilians and because it could trigger a wider regional conflict.
That balance of power is about to change, though. If Iran develops nuclear weapons, the very existence of this tiny nation of Israel will be threatened. The Iranian regime has left little doubt that it intends to see Israel “wiped off the map. Hamas is using the same language, not coincidentally, and has announced it will begin launching missiles into Israel from the West Bank too.
If the world doesn’t act to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions, it must be prepared for the consequences of Israel defending itself.

Not One More Thing Until the Border Is Sealed
We should stop, slow down and absorb. We should sit and settle. We should do what you do after eating an eight-course meal. We should digest what we’ve eaten.
We should close our borders. We should do whatever it takes to close them tight and solid. Will that take the Army? Then send the Army. Does it mean building a wall? Then build a wall, but the wall must have doors, which can be opened a little or a lot down the road once we know where we are. Should all legal immigration stop? No. We should make a list of what our nation needs, such as engineers and nurses, and then admit a lot of engineers and nurses. We should take in what we need to survive and flourish.
As we end illegal immigration, we should set ourselves to the Americanization of the immigrants we have. They haven’t only joined a place of riches, it’s a place of meaning. We must teach them what it is they’ve joined and why it is good and what is expected of them and what is owed. We stopped Americanizing ourselves 40 years ago. We’ve got to start telling the story of our country again.
As to the eight or 10 or 12 or 14 million illegals who are here–how interesting that our government doesn’t know the number–we should do nothing dramatic or fraught or unlike us. We should debate what to do, at length. Debate isn’t bad. There’s a lot to say. We can all join in. We should do nothing extreme, only things that are commonsensical.
Peggy talks common sense. I may disagree on some points with her, but that’s the point. Let’s sit down and discuss them.
Her main message is simple, though. There is no crisis. There is no need to “normalize” millions of illegals overnight. What there is a need for is to stop illegal immigration cold. Seal the borders now. Once that is done, then we can hold that national conversation about all immigration, both legal and illegal.
The only people drumming up an immigration crisis today are the whores who are being paid to do so, and the True Believers who follow them. Yes, George Bush, that includes you.

Although the White House insists that there can’t be effective border security without amnesty for millions and a temporary worker program for hundreds of thousands, according to one of today’s fact sheets: “With Enhanced Enforcement, We Have Already Seen a Tremendous Change At the Border. The number of people apprehended for illegally crossing our Southern border is down by nearly 27 percent in 2007 from this point in 2006.”

U.S. Border Patrol agents have been ordered not to arrest illegal aliens along the section of the Arizona border where protesters patrolled last month because an increase in apprehensions there would prove the effectiveness of Minuteman volunteers, The Washington Times has learned.
You don’t suppose the drop in “apprehensions” might have been ordered, do you? Especially since it seems to back up the administration’s claims that its vapor barriers and unbuilt fences are “effective” at controlling border crossings?

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Legislation dealing with illegal immigration divided Republicans in Columbia today at the state GOP convention.
US Senator Lindsey Graham was booed when he talked about the legislation and the crowd shouted —NO— when said it was the best deal on the issue that could be reached.
A few minutes later US Senator Jim DeMint was cheered as he said the bill allows for amnesty and people are trying to ram it down America’s throat.
The state’s two US senators aren’t only on the opposite sides of the immigration issue. They also are backing different presidential candidates.
Graham worked on the legislation with US Senator John McCain of Arizona. And DeMint backs former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
Romney was at the convention and also received cheers as he attacked the bill for giving amnesty to illegal immigrants.

Don’t be fooled. Prerequisites to citizenship or permanent residency status are irrelevant to whether this bill rewards law-breaking or will encourage more in the future. Its key feature is rather that illegal aliens, according to press reports, can immediately have their illegal status wiped away with a temporary-residency permit, available virtually upon demand. That’s it. The rest is noise. Whether or not one has to show English proficiency and a knowledge of civics to become a citizen is irrelevant from an illegal alien’s perspective; a minute proportion of illegal or even legal Mexican and Central American immigrants come here with the desire to become citizens. The naturalization rate among qualified Hispanics has traditionally been negligible compared to other national groups; it started rising only when Congress required citizenship to receive welfare benefits.
You get what you pay for. We are paying for more illegal aliens. A lot more.
With the Reagan Amnesty and its bastard offspring, we bought ourselves 12-20 million more illegals. With the Bush/McCain/Kennedy amnesty, our next purchase may add up to fifty or sixty million illegals 20 years down the road.

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and perhaps future presidential candidate, denounced it on Sean Hannity’s radio show as “a sellout of every conservative principle.” The Heritage Foundation agreed. Congressman Mike Pence issued a statement calling the bill an amnesty.
While the deal was being picked apart by talk radio and the blogs, John McCain was appearing on television with Ted Kennedy to promote it.
That pretty much says everything that needs to be said about McCain on this, doesn’t it?
