Setting up a wireless range expander – this one is the Linksys WRE54G.
I think I’ve found the (undocumented) key to making it work!!
Follow all ‘documented instructions’ and connect to the ‘net.
Then log on to you range expander (192.168.1.240 is the default for the Linksys Model) and …
Turn off SSID broadcasting.
Connect to Wireless Network with “unidentified” connection and type in SSID (for some reason this is the same SSID as the wired connections from your router). Use your main Access Point (AP) Router’s IP address as the gateway.
Signal went from 12-17% (pre-enhanced level) to solid, constant, consistant, reliable, rock-solid, unwavering 100%.
If this tip helps your configuration, send me $5.00. If not, you can always move into a tiny house.
Thanks!

Turning off the SSID broadcast also has the corollary security increase of not immediately alerting people to your network’s existence – unless they go seriously looking for it, the network is now pretty much invisible to most folks. (I am assuming, of course, that you are already using WEP keys, or their equivalents, in addition…)
True.
I run a separate router on another IP subnet set to broadcast SSID with no WEP security to keep the poachers happy.
Deception is but one of the the keys to security.
This may already be know, but WEP is almost as useless as no security at all. WEP can be broke in 10 minutes and for the fairly knowledgeable WPA as well. WPA2 is the standard now.
