Of all the gun legislation currently on the table, universal background checks seem the most likely to pass. The proposal would close the so-called “gun show loophole” by requiring background checks for all gun “sales” – which also happen to include gifts and inheritances.
Could I support such a measure?
No – it is an infringement.
Worse, such a law could be crafted in a way that requires the establishment of transfer records retention or other forms of ownership records.
By definition, any law that restrict firearm ownership is an infringement.
Infringements began with the 1934 National Firearms Act and now include the 1968 Gun Control Act, the 1986 Hughes Amendment and the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment. [Corrected - Ed.]
Repeal those and we can begin have a “discussion.”
Infringements are never removed; these legislative proposals only add more.

I think that should be the 1986 Hughes Amendment and the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment.
Step 1 Sure you can own a gun if it is registered and you aren’t disqualified; step 2, you just aren’t allowed to register a new gun and the bar for disqualifications keeps getting lower and lower.
