The AT&T Android app AT&T Smart Wi-Fi on the Samsung Galaxy Note II disables Wi-Fi while purporting to connect to ‘free’ AT&T Wi-Fi hot spots.

It doesn’t connect to ‘free’ spots. Instead, it redirects to billable ‘on-air’ spots.

Actually, the AT&T Smart Wi-Fi app disconnects your legitimate Wi-Fi connection and reverts to AT&T or roaming 4G network carriers.

This can be especially costly if international roaming charges are involved.

The AT&T Smart Wi-Fi cannot be uninstalled or disabled as far as I know.

Only a forced shutdown through the Application manager screen turns this nasty application off and enables you to connect via alternate Wi-Fi networks. You will have to perform a ‘forced shutdown’ of the AT&T Smart Wi-Fi app every time your AT&T Android phone is restarted.

AT&T Smart Wi-Fi is a nasty application. EVERYONE should sue them for damages.

I just bought an Optimus G and yes the Smart Wifi was pre-installed on it. My work place has 30+ AP’s on their private network. When I walk from one to within range of another the wifi turns off. Because I’m in such a large building I have to cell coverage so I have no service whatsoever. I have to enter the key about half of the time. It thinks all of these Ap’s are a different network even though no other network device I’ve used (laptop and a previous Sprint phone) ever had this problem.
